My mother is a great cook, as was her mother, who's cooking may never be surpassed. For Christmas, my mom made Sarma, which is stuffed cabbage rolls with beef and rice. We also requested Sauerbraten and Knoedels, so she made that, too. We had the Sarma before Christmas, and the Sauerbraten on Christmas day. I am always amazed at how my mom does it, and wish I could cook like her or my grandmother. The thing is, I have learned everything I know from watching my mom, my grandmother, and my aunts cook, so something must eventually rub off, somehow, I always hope.
During this winter break, I've come to realize that when I have time, I'm quite a decent cook too, when I decide to focus on it.
Today I used up the ground turkey we had in the fridge and made it into a very flavorful sauce for pasta. Turkey can be quite bland unless you give it lots of flavor with spices, so I used bell peppers, garlic, onion, cayenne, cumin, salt, pepper, and added a very good tomato sauce from a jar to give my own concoction some extra depth. The combination was very good and spicy. We enjoyed it together for lunch today, with parmesan cheese on top, and we didn't go out all day.
